Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez Stops Antonio Vargas in Sixth Round, Becomes Three-Division World Champion

In a dominant performance on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, undefeated pound-for-pound star Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (24-0, 17 KOs) moved up to bantamweight and captured the WBA world title with a sixth-round knockout victory over defending champion Antonio Vargas (19-2-1, 11 KOs).

Rodriguez, the 26-year-old southpaw from San Antonio, Texas, made his debut at 118 pounds after unifying titles at super flyweight (115 lbs). He systematically broke down the taller, more experienced Vargas, who entered with an 11-fight unbeaten streak since his only prior loss.

Fight Breakdown

The early rounds were competitive. Vargas used his reach and pressure to land clean shots, making it a tougher test than many anticipated. Rodriguez, however, stayed composed, using sharp footwork, precise counterpunching, and body work to gradually seize control.

  • Round 4/5: Rodriguez scored a knockdown late in the fourth (some reports note the fifth), shifting the momentum decisively. He began landing heavier combinations as Vargas tired.
  • Round 6: Bam pressed the finish. A feint to the body set up a right hook followed by a crisp left hand that dropped Vargas. The challenger was unable to beat the count, with referee Jack Reiss stopping the bout at approximately 1:15 of the round.

Compubox Stats: Rodriguez landed 81 of 213 punches (38%), while Vargas connected on 81 of 279 (29%). Bam’s efficiency and power in the later rounds proved decisive.

Post-Fight Moments and Reaction

In a display of sportsmanship, Rodriguez handed the newly won WBA belt back to Vargas with a hug before the official presentation. Bam expressed respect for his opponent’s toughness, noting Vargas was “a lot tougher than I expected” in the early going.

Rodriguez, now a three-division champion (having previously won titles at flyweight and super flyweight), said that he will fight anybody. To fans(myself included) that means a step up to undisputed bantamweight king Naoya “The Monster”Inoue. His trainer, Robert Garcia, suggested one more tune-up before that potential superfight. Possibly a unification with Chispa Medina.

The important thing here is that they do NOT want to move the Inoue timeline back.

Robert stated that they just want to squeeze in one more match between now and possibly fighting Naoya in January or February 2027 as Turki Alalshikh has been targeting this time frame.

Significance

At just 26 years old, “Bam” continues his rapid ascent in boxing’s pound-for-pound rankings. This victory solidifies his status as one of the sport’s elite talents, showcasing his adaptability across weight classes and finishing power. In my opinion, he is the pound-for-pound king now.

Rodriguez improves to 24-0 and joins an exclusive group of young multi-division champions. The boxing world now turns its eyes toward potential unification bouts or that elusive Inoue showdown. But is Bam ready??

I think now is the time to fight Inoue.
