Las Vegas- Teofimo Lopez defeated Rolando “Rolly” Romero by majority decision on Saturday night, August 22, 2026, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to capture the WBA welterweight title and become a three-division world champion.
Lopez, moving up from junior welterweight for his debut at 147 pounds, improved to 23-2 (13 KOs). Romero, making the first defense of the belt he won by upsetting Ryan Garcia in May 2025, fell to 17-3 (13 KOs).
Judges scored the 12-round bout 116-112 and 115-113 for Lopez, with the third card reading 114-114. According to CompuBox, Lopez outlanded Romero 124-73 overall (including a career-high 62 jabs) while throwing significantly more punches.

Fight Overview
The bout featured two longtime friends and former sparring partners whose relationship had grown strained in the lead-up. Much of the action was measured and relatively low-output, with Lopez controlling the pace behind a consistent jab and higher activity while Romero waited for openings and power shots.
Lopez generally dictated the early rounds. Romero found his best moments in the middle of the fight, particularly round 5, when he opened a cut near Lopez’s right eye with a left hook, rocked him, and briefly put him in trouble (Lopez went to a knee at one point, though it was not ruled a knockdown). Romero failed to press the advantage consistently afterward and returned to a more passive approach.
Lopez regained control thereafter, staying busier and more accurate through the second half of the fight. The final round saw Lopez outland Romero significantly as the pair showed mutual respect near the end.
Post-fight Reactions
Lopez called the victory a statement after his January loss to Shakur Stevenson: “If you lose and you come back, then you never lost because you’re a winner.” Romero strongly disputed the scores, claiming he was barely hit and calling for a rematch.
The card aired on DAZN and Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view. The result positions Lopez for potential high-profile matchups at welterweight while leaving Romero seeking to rebound from the first defense loss.
